What’s in a Casino?

A casino is an entertainment center, but it’s also much more. Gambling, games of chance and a wide variety of other entertainment options attract people to casinos. Some of the world’s most famous casinos have a glamorous past, and even more are renowned for their design, architecture or amenities.

Casinos make their money mainly by selling tickets to gamblers, and they do this on an enormous scale. Some of the best-known casinos, like the Bellagio in Las Vegas, are known for their dazzling fountain shows and luxurious suites. Others, like the Casino Barriere d’Enghien-les-Bains in France, are known for their thermal baths and luxurious spas.

Most casinos use a combination of traditional security measures and newer technology to keep their patrons safe. These include video cameras that record the activities of casino guests, and electronic systems that monitor the results of casino games to quickly discover any statistical deviations from expected values. Many casinos have a dedicated physical security force and a specialized surveillance department.

Modern casinos offer a huge selection of games, from the classics like blackjack and roulette to a number of less familiar ones. Some of these games may be influenced by skill, but the vast majority is pure luck. Regardless of how they’re played, however, all casino games have built in advantages for the casino that can amount to a significant percentage of the total gross profits generated by their use. This virtual assurance of profit is what enables casinos to offer comps to their highest-spending patrons, such as free spectacular entertainment, transportation and luxury living quarters.
